HANOI – You only get one chance, it’s said, to make a first impression. And until recently, foreigners arriving at Noi Bai International Airport here in Vietnam’s capital could not have been favorably impressed. Small, dismal, dysfunctional – those are the words that come to mind as I remember waiting (and waiting) with fellow travelers by the luggage carousel. That was then. Today, Noi Bai Airport, while not a showpiece, has been greatly enlarged and improved with $900 million worth of work, particularly with the new international terminal. And instead of the old road, there’s the new, smooth highway that shaves at least 10 minutes off the ride into Hanoi and passes beneath the five towering A-shaped … [Read more...] about Welcome to Hanoi – new and improved!

A powerful and destructive low-pressure system in the North Atlantic has pushed the mercury up to two degrees Celsius (35.6 degrees Fahrenheit) at the pole, 20°C above the seasonal norm. LONDON: With temperatures above freezing at the North Pole, deadly tornadoes in Texas, extreme heat in Australia and floods in Britain and Missouri, the world is beset by extreme weather events as it welcomes 2016. A powerful and destructive low-pressure system in the North Atlantic has pushed the mercury up to two degrees Celsius (35.6 degrees Fahrenheit) at the pole, 20°C above the seasonal norm. The Arctic has borne the brunt of global warming, with temperatures 3°C higher than the pre-industrial era. But linking the current mild conditions to climate change is premature, warned Natalie Hasell, meteorologist at the Canadian Department of the Environment, saying that scientists do not base their conclusions "on one anomaly". The North Atlantic depression also brought eastern Canada an … [Read more...] about Weird weather brings warm welcome to 2016
